Are you non-American? We're physically unable to empirically perceive any phenomena outside of our borders. The Canadian border, where forests and soil sharply disappear into white and blank empty infinity is an amazing view, try it. One of the most existential experiences of my life

You're missing out.

Russian literature sucks. It's extremely limited not only in scope (only at most a dozen interesting literary figures out of ~200+ million people from a period spanning ~40 years out of 1000+ years of the existence of slavic people) but in thematic diversity as well - it's almost all "muh hardships in life and how i'm using spirituality/metaphysics/transcendence to overcome them." That's it. There's no decent realist book (with a different theme to the one mentioned above, at least). No decent sci-fi book (besides Roadside Picnic, maybe). No decent gothic book. No decent horror book. No decent modernist book. No decent post-modernist book. No decent.. well, almost anything really.

Russian literature is as barren and uninteresting as Russia's geographic, social and political landscape is. It's sad that this is the entire world for you. Your brain must've undergone extreme shrinkage as a result.

America alone has:
1. Herman Melville
2. Walt Whitman
3. William Faulkner
4. Edgar Allan Poe
5. Ralph Waldo Emerson
6. Philip K. Dick
7. Thomas Pynchon
8. William Gaddis
9. Cormac McCarthy
10. DFW
11. Kurt Vonnegut
12. Nathaniel Hawthorne
13. Henry David Thoreau
14. John Steinbeck
15. Ursula Le Guin
16. Ezra Pound
17. Frank Herbert
18. Ernest Hemingway
19. F. Scott Fitzgerald
20. Truman Capote
21. Mark Twain
22. Don DeLillo
23. Philip Roth
24. Allen Ginsberg
25. William Burroughs
26. Jack Kerouac
27. Alexander Theroux
28. Charles Bukowski
29. Hunter Thompson
30. William Gibson
And that's just America. I didn't even mention any British writers yet. Pathetic.

Is american literature overrated?
The american mind is straightforward and hence lends itself to a simpler writing style and ideas. This is its' biggest strength but ultimately the cause of its' utter failure.
Apart from a few exceptions it seems that time is better spent reading European classics.
I am not here to bait people, ultimately I hope I have the wrong opinion.

Are Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy literally the only Russian authors you’ve ever read? Authors like Chekhov and Turgenev do realism without the religion. Besides, novels like Anna Karenina and War and Peace are literally the best realism has to offer. Everyone recognises that Tolstoys moralism is a blot against his art, but everyone also recognises how aesthetically advanced his works are.

No decent realist books though. My point still stands.
And that's because these realist books are still set within the same tired context of the same tired circle of life in muh repressive Russian Empire.

Ultimately, it's an extremely boring fucking setting.
>>17455939
Even a chink could name some modernist/sci-fi books written in his own language. Doesn't make your literature unique, nor that book interesting. I could read this mayonnaise guy, but he's a rando. I could as well read some chink or spic writer. It's all the same random bullshit to me.
