What does /lit/ think of House of Leaves?

>> No.17430142

it freed me from ever casually accepting a book recommendation ever again

I remember reading it during my second year of high school (2011) and thinking it was the coolest shit ever. I read some of it last October and wasn't that surprised to find that it's quite terrible, especially the Johnny Truant sections.

It wasn't that bad. Don't be so dramatic.

It was the first and last time I took book suggestions from the internet

I bought it because of the hype and never read it.

not that anon but probably that it could be condensed into a pamphlet without losing anything.

100% a meme book but not as bad as /lit/ says. It's ok

More like House of Leave It On the Shelf :^)

>> No.17430938

The actual house sections are pretty spooky

I would totally love more fiction but mostly how non fiction work could be written in this way, for a bad writer it could be just a cheap trick but if someone has the talent and can use it, it’s pretty engaging even if I didn’t care enough for Johnny and all that.

>> No.17431012

I don’t understand why people find it over rated or disappointing. It set out to pull some neat tricks and it did them well. I loved the experience of reading it and going through the multiple layers of story mixed with the whole crazy footnotes thing. Sure the truant sections were written in a voice that got somewhat annoying, but that’s kinda the point, right? If every line of a book was pleasurable to read, then there wouldn’t be any tension or drama or meaning developed over time.

I just got to the start of section XIII earlier today. I think I might take a break soon and finish Pynchon’s V..

big time cope

Benefits from a great setup and idea, but the execution is so bloodless that it bores one nearly to death. It's about as deep as a good creepypasta, just much much longer.

it's all right, unfortunately being the kind of stuff that mesmerizes midwits into orgasmic bliss it's vaunted WAY beyond its effective value, so people read the hype engage with it and make passive aggressive threads on /lit/ full of resentment and disappointment.

I am stealing your line

Read it on a /lit/ recommendation about 10 years ago and it blew my mind, haven't read it fully since though. Tried to read some of his other books but they just feel like everything this board shits on HoL for x100

Mesmerizingly layered, beautiful, sad, haunting...
The dull-on-purpose sections in the beginning as well as casually upending the whole narrative in a note in the appendix makes for great pleb filters too. You immediately know who has a brain and who doesn't based on their comments about the book.
