While the anthropological stuff isn't true (the easiest way to disprove that would be the fact that religion is completely underplayed in a medieval setting), ASOIAF took the limited third-person realist fantasy book to its pinnacle. I have to cringe when people say ASOIAF is bad, but love Bakker, Erikson, Abercrombie, Sanderson etc. who all write in the same mode GRRM does but are substantially worse.

I read the first "A wizard of Earthsea" a really long time ago, thought it was ok, maybe I was just too young to appreciate it. I'll try them again.
I miss the really comfortable books that you stumble into sometimes, books that are ostensibly about a generic plot but then turn out to be worlds you'd want to live in with characters you really like. Everything seems tragic and heartless in modern SF/Fantasy, I keep reading books where the protagonist or his party fails because the author needed them to learn some lesson or be shown as not-omnipotent but it always falls flat and feels forced and pointlessly disempowering. I haven't read a good book in a long time.

Just open Reddit or go to the 17th Shard. Those people are pathologically obsessed with theory crafting. That's what gets them going. This only propels the fandom to create fanart and fanfictions. Terms like "couple shipping" become commonplace. The larger the community, the more popular your becomes. It's quite literally like anime. And I mean it.

The first time I remember seeing this, was when I saw an Harry Potter book describing the beasts and creatures from the Harry Potter universe.

>> No.17422376

>>17422227
I think it's related to the rise of video games and fandom culture. Now people can imagine what it would be like to use these magic systems themselves and explore these detailed worlds themselves. Easier to create OCs and the like who can use the magic systems in their own super special ways.

It also appeals to the perennial fandom obsession with "Would would win in a fight?" type scenarios. With a laundry list of rulesets to pull from you can easily create versus matches between your favorite fantasy charactters.

This was really good, and a few of the subsequent books were just as good. It's about a guy who gets on a ship and turns some shitty situations around through sheer force of personality and cleverness, it's surprisingly wholesome.
Is there anything else like this, where whole chapters about how to make a good cup of coffee feel oddly appropriate? Not really sure what genre this would even be.

Now that I think about it, main cause is probably video games rather than Sanderson. In most RPGs, there's a detailed explanation for how the characters can use magic with clearly defined rules and limitations. I wanted to share my overwhelming appreciation of Brandon Sanderson. I'm currently reading 'The Way of Kings' and am struck by how complex the characterisation is, how thorough the worldbuilding is, and how creative and natural his writing style is. I'd visited his site earlier where he has the bar charts showing his progress with his books and assumed he was a taste of the future- machines generating stories for us based on calculation and formulae. Could I have been more wrong?

I tried out the first book of the Mistborn series and was absorbed by Kelsier. Some of the fight scenes in that book were so imaginative and vividly described. And now I've finally got my bands on 'The Way of Kings' (previously I was mistakenly delivered two copies of part 2 so I delayed seeking out the first part as life is busy). Again, the characters as so fascinating, relatable, and complex. His writing is still original and demonstrating effortless creativity. And there's a certain comfort to knowing that you're enjoying the writing of a prolific writer who is good at what they do- there's more to seek and enjoy.

How does he do it? It's like he's cut out the whole 'oh, give me time as I live and seek inspiration for the next page' and has managed to observe and absorb so much about life, personality, writing and so much more and has managed to wrestle it into some kind of order so that he can draw on things at will as he churns out these fresh, satiating books that are so well balanced and... whole (in a wholesomely whole kind of way). It's awe inspiring. Putting pen to paper seems hard enough, but doing is so masterfully... I wouldnt't be surprised if someone told me that he's actually several centuries old, having devoted the last few to the study of story and writing.

What a gem. I'm writing this because Fantasy used to play a large role in helping me cope with loneliness and depression when I was younger and, over time, the repetitiveness of it and the new grimdark stuff just couldn't do it. I've finally found something that, once again, is giving me a bit of passion and comfort. Thank you so much, Mr Sanderson.

I read mostly sci-fi and mostly men.

I found that men tend to present and explore more original ideas, like Egan's alternative physics in Orthogonal or the short story Luminous where they want to exploit a realm with different physics to do impossible calculations. Or Watts ideas about consciousness. These ideas tend to be the focus rather then just the backdrop. Men tend to genuinely excited about exploring space or editing the human genome.

For women sci-fi seems to be just the backdrop taken from somewhere else. They seem to be use the settings to lectures about morals or for romance. The one good thing I have found that women do much better on a consistent basis, is action. Men seem to focus on describing physical actions they have in their head, but this is simply not very exciting in written form. I think Joe Abercrombie first law trilogy and the expanse books really suffered from this. In contrast the action in the Hunger Games was well done and clever for the most part.

What is your take /litizens on the men vs women debate?

I finally have an idea for a world that I'm excited to write fantasy stories in lads. I just need to come up with (read: steal) some ideas for cool creatures to populate it with. Any recs for books or short stories with neat fantasy fauna? Last thing I read with some was BotNS, but even that only really had a few across the whole series. (Alzabo, Hethor's stuff, Zak.)

It's bitches like this that ruin fantasy. They can't separate fact from fiction, or how all over the world, at least 1 female is raped every single
day. Hell, some girl is getting raped right now.

They get on like rape isn't something that happens. She is okay with the little boys getting buggered and killed, but a woman getting raped is beyond the line. They better hope that America continues to stand, because when America falls, women will be forced back into marrying against their will, and many lesbians will be having their husbands rape them every night, and string them up when it is found out she is a pervert who introduces little girls to her hedonistic ways.

this, the amount of orgazms are stupid and unrealistic. but in that sense he’s no different than GRRM or most typical fantasy writers. the difference is that bakker shows that everyone (including and especially men) is vulnerable to violation and with a few exceptions, his writing emphasizes the horror and brutal nature of sexual violence, rather than depicting it as trivial or “sexy” like GRRM does. it’s a point of contention whose nuances clearly eludes most normie readers, but having read all of TAE i do believe that his thematic approach to rape comes from a place of empathy rather than just exploitation.

not to say bakker is a feminist, but his writing on sex and violence is certainly more complicated and critical than shit like GRRM, Gor, most sword&sorcery etc.

Bakker isn't good. There's a good reason publishers dropped him - his prose is fine, but prose isn't what makes a book good. It can make it bad, but not good. He's never had the other components necessary to hit "good." The people who talk about him are like the sorts of people on /mu/ who constantly post about how great and underrated and underreviewed some obscure band they found is, clinging to that little sense of individuality that they get from investing themselves into something other people clearly do not care to.
