I played through the entire game recently and it’s fun but it doesn’t hold up too well, some parts like DB and especially TG are great, Oblivion TG is my favourite TES quest line other than morrowind’s main quest. It has too little compared to morrowind in terms of variety of weapons and armour skills and the levelling system is extremely broken (that last point is easily fixed by mods though), worst of all is not just how lazy the aesthetic choice is but how lazily the setting is created, cyrodiil as brought across in oblivion is the most boring TES setting.

I don’t play video games but I would likely play something to do with the elder scrolls, I know it’s a lowbrow take but I genuinely think the lore and world is well built and good fantasy. Kirkbride’s not-so-subtle references to thelema, the subtle references to tantra especially with the Chim-Krim bija, the dualistic cosmology, the Vedanta aspects, the world building in general is great. While I wouldn’t say the prose and verse in the game is particularly good, I agree with Lewis Carroll that there are four aspects to literature which ought to be considered.

Narrative with some slight adjustments can be lifted into other formats, characters can often be easily lifted, prose style cannot be lifted at all but the special one, myth and motif creation is fully independent of the medium and can be translated fully as the medium has no influence over the myth. A proper myth can be transmitted via prose, verse, music, movie, telephone call, conversation or painting. No matter, it keeps its integrity and beauty and power. The balancing of these is where perfection in art lies for the written work. Largely elder scrolls largest strength and where I think we should praise it is that the myth of it is coherent, properly religious, absorbing, ethereal and imaginative. If it was paired with a superior artist I have no doubt it would be a superb work on a global artistic level.
