I actually borrowed heavily from this chart when I made mine. Lovecraft’s account basically still holds up compared to other histories of the genre I could find. People have criticized me for including The Picture of Dorian Gray but Lovecraft made me realize that it very much sits at least adjacent to the horror table. It’s way more a horror novel than Frankenstein.

All that said, I think the biggest problem with my own chart is all the space given to pre horror gothic. It’s all good, but I’m less convinced now that a person who wants to ‘get into horror’ needs to read through 200 years of ‘pre horror’ writing.
