Read Rashomon by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa. Afterwards, I would read the stuff on this list from the top to the bottom.

This could definitely work, but focusing too much on the post-war era literature wise won't give you a full appreciation for Japanese literature imo. I say this as someone who started out with Murakami.

Now that I think on it, reading Rashomon alone is a bit of a short intro, if you want a collection to serve as an intro then Rashōmon and Seventeen Other Stories is good.

Rashomon was an incredible kurosawa film so I can only imagine the novel it is based off is excellent as well
