Because despite my love of complaining, I do see the good in things. And Sanderson has potential. His stories are just told in an obnoxious manner. If the telling of his stories was better, then he truly would be great. I'm hoping that Mistborn is better told than Elantris or Warbreaker.

Of course he has something going for him. I just wouldn't call it "potential".
All you see is all you will ever get from him. Don't suddenly expect him to wake up one day and start writing masterpieces.
He has the Cosmere up his ass and he will never escape it, making his books substantially worse because of it.

He has good ideas. But on paper, he can sadly not deliver.
He can't write good prose, good characters, and realistic dialogue.

The writing consists of a bunch of cliched phrases so I couldn't really finish it. The fact the writer was into costume making and therefore devoted more energy in describing clothing than characters or the scenery was really off putting. A fat American old lady writing about clothes and attractive men described with shit straight out of Twilight was too much for me.
I don't think the main antagonist makes it a worthy read, like the faggot who memed me into reading it claimed, but whatever.

I've always been a fan of stories from people playing games like Dwarf Fortress, CDDA, and other roguelikes with emergent storytelling where there is a genuine sense that anything can happen.

Are there any fantasy books like that? I'm not looking for characters being killed off for shock value or something random for random's sake, but are there any decent stories where the formula isn't obvious after the first few pages but the sequence of events make logical sense?

Please for the love of god no Dragonlance.

have a Sci-Fi story I'm finishing, and it's driven more by the characters than by the setting and subtly focusing on Earth's bias issues while having to recreate society on a new planet a la a young adult (actual young adults, not the genre) version of Lord of the Flies.

Because it's driven by the characters, two of the MC's clash over my hijabi's headscarf vs. my Wealthy-Elite-White-Christian boy's need for control leading to one of the rising action events and I 'm mentally torn as to if it's "too religious" for a Sci-Fi novel (or any novel genre where the book isn't deliberately focused on religion).

Why I think not: 1.) "Traditionalist" Christianity seems to think/talk a LOT about other religions, specifically TO people of other faiths. 2.) It's the "easy way" for MC 2 to try to exert control, which goes well with his background of having power/respect/control/success handed to him with little effort. 3.) MC 1 is close with the opposing group MC 2 is battling for power against so it's also an easy way to try to hurt/control them.

Why I think yes: I'm scared it might be taken as "lazy author went for the low-hanging fruit of religion vs. religion" instead of as a thought-out conflict between the two characters no matter how much I put into it.

It's just a very different tone to the first book. It also semi-switches genre from 'sci-fi omnibus weird' to simple space opera, which throws some people off.

Additionally the people who hate on Fall usually only like a handful of the stories from the first book, usually the Priest's tale. I guess that's the risk you run having a collection of thematically distinct stories in your book. At least Fall is consistent

“Who’s that?” General Areamanteras abruptly muttered. Conphas found and recognized the man immediately.

I know that this is a hot take, but having Nobel laureate tier writers is what I’m missing the most in the genre. And I don’t mean modern Novel.

I've read most of his stuff.

Neuropath is kind of sleek and hip like the other guy said, it's pretty fucked up but reads like an entertaining steven king kind of book, pretty good overall. Main criticism people have is how there are basically long parts where a character is talking to another and explaining how fucked up it is and bakkers ideas about the subject of the book (crazy genius neuroscientist guy who worked on mkultra type shit for the government is loose and killing people gruesomely and hacking the physical meat of their brain to make them do stuff like have orgasms from cutting themselves so they cut themselves to death on camera, kind of like SAW or something. He thinks it's all pretty possible with modern or near future technology, I didn't mind that though, pretty good book anyway.

Disciple of the dog is basically a noir/detective story, super cynical main character who is a private eye, the gimmick (and it's a pretty interesting one) is that he has like a 100% perfect memory, like PERFECT. There's some great bits where he's like, "almost at my millionath ciggarete. Anyway this guy has to investigate these dissapearances and murders, there's this weird kind of branch dividian cult in the area as well. If you like the genre you will probably like this book.

Prince of nothing series is what he's most known for, super grimdark epic fantasy, not pozzed, great prose, everyone is an asshole, great stuff. First book in the series is "the darkness that comes before" 3 books in that series and there's a 2nd series after a 20 year timeskip that is 4 books.

I recommend you start with this free short story by him https://rsbakker.files.wordpress.com/2015/11/crash-space-tpb.pdf

Lathe of Heaven - Ursula K. LeGuin (1971)
This reads like LeGuin wrote a Philip K. Dick story. I felt that way from beginning to end. It comes with all the fun and problems that being a PKD story entails. LeGuin and Dick went to school together but never met and later corresponded. She said in an interview that this book was heavily inspired by his 60s novels and it really shows, for better and worse.

Most everything about it went all over the place. Some parts I really enjoyed and others and I really wondered why I was reading. It was rather different from anything else I've read from her, which in this case meant it was worse than her average. As a story in of itself, it's fine. As a LeGuin work, it's a definite disappointment for me.

The premise is that the protagonist's dreams become reality. This causes a lot of problems for everyone, himself included. The practical purpose of this is to demonstrate comparative continuums of existence. In some ways it's a monkey's paw type of story. Everything is subordinate to the various short demonstrations of alternate retroactive presents.

Fortunately it's a relatively short read so it doesn't overstay its welcome. How much you'll get out of this will depend on willing you are you draw meaning from the assertions and statements throughout the book, but for me it mostly fell flat, even the parts I agreed with. This may well be her most Taoist work. It's certainly a work of political, ethical, and religious philosophy with definite and strongly held opinions about how we ought to be and even more so how we shouldn't be.

However, based on what the average person reveals in their review of it, it seems to be a very useful book for disillusioning people of certain noxious though ostensibly well-intentioned beliefs. I'm glad it's as relatively popular as it is.

They only do this because they think that it will make them money. Another thing that you have to consider is that the overwhelming majority of readers (and sff in particular) are women. And most of these are young and progressivists.

I just think that the genre is filled with introverts with no social skills. Some writers simply cannot write dialogue, making character interactions pure cringe.

it's less that the overwhelming majority of readers are women and more that the overwhelming majority of readers who read new series by new authors are women and that number is in itself tiny.

The decision makers at major publishers have the same problem that a lot of corporations have - they have social media and marketing people trying to convince them that the vocal minority on reddit and twitter represent the majority view. Obviously those people want fantasy books that reflect their left wing social and political views, but I think the majority of people, even left wingers, don't want to read stories with so much political propaganda.

Fantasy has never been a great place to find good dialog. I don't know why that is; it could be because you have some people trying to write with an archaic style they're not trained in. Or it could be because you have authors trying way too hard to write dialog that's witty or clever instead of realistic.

sounds like someone's feeling a little...hopeful
riddle me this:
do you really think bakker would actually give the series some kind of "happy" or even "gray" conclusion?
either our heroes go on some madcap journey to Zeüm or Eänna and somehow, magically, find the heron spear and stop the no-god at the last second, returning the world to the granary of damnation it always was. or else, (more likely) they try, and fail, and evil wins again... so what's the point of bothering to write more books, deal with more infuriating publishers, just to end up at the same morbid and depressing conclusion?
i'm pretty sure "salt and butchery" is meant to be the End of the series. i'm pretty sure bakker's moved on to greener pastures. perhaps we must all do the same.

why do people say this? i didn't get it all. they act fairly normal, in accord with their characterisation, sometimes too simplistically (unrealistic), there's nothing like this description. are they just used to fake, cool and righteous characters, that they can attach themselves to escapist-like? i understood exactly where every character was coming from and genuinely liked parts of them all (though that's irrelevant to their quality and readability). they don't seem unnecessarily bad to me, except maybe kelhuss because he's kinda inhuman and doesn't give a shit outside of self-preservation and his goal, and eliminates things he can't possess even when he doesn't need to.

this just points out things you say are bad in isolation and ignores the full characters. reductionist. and a lot of the things you said aren't even damningly bad, or bad at all if you see it from their perspective. Cnaiür is a wife beater as well as a man of tradition who supports, protects, and loves his wives. the bit where he was fighting sarcellus under serwe's corpse was great, sort of finally doing his job as her man posthumously. also, it's made pretty clear that he finds his actions contradictory, even though you could have a character where this happens and all is well, it's not the case with him as he suffers. he doesn't know why he hits his wives when he loves them, it's because he's damaged and not in a barbaric or evil way but in the way of a confused child.

also, i guess i thought grimdark meant being edgy and silly compounding of bad events and suffering because i've read all of the things you listed except asoiaf and thought they were edgy and boring. still not sure the label is really accurate here tho, all of the people have their beliefs and ideals.

I'll put it to you this way: For the start of every book, the author lists some of his credentials and achievements. How he served in the military, what he wrote before, and a bit on the book you're currently reading.

For the first 3 books, he really hypes up the series. How it's a new fantasy vision. And so imaginative, and the scope is amazing, and blah-blah. I'm summarizing. But that's the gist.
But then in the third book, he finds a new angle to suck his own dick. And describes it as an underground masterpiece. he really leaded on the "underground" aspect. Meaning, in the first few books, he actually expected it to be something popular and groundbreaking. But then in the end, he realized he wasn't getting the sales and recognition.

So what you're getting with this book, is a failed fantasy author, who thought he was going to be big. And who /lit/ jizzes over because it's less mainstream.

Granted, I realize this was probably added at a later date. So it probably doesn't exist in whatever print copies you guys have. And it may not have been written by Gene Wolfe himself. Yeah, no shit. It's an audiobook. Author rarely read their own material. I never said the voice was the author's. I said he listed some credentials. As in, he typed them on paper, and then the narrator spoke them. Duh

>(why would he refer to himself in the third person)
Some people do that. Why wouldn't he refer to himself in the third person? It could be that he's just an egotistical guy. Or maybe he thought it sounded more authentic/humbled, is a third party wrote his credentials rather than himself.
Regardless, he must have given them his history to be included in this publication. Because they have information that would be hard to find. Or if they did find it all themselves, they would still need to run it by him to fact check. And so on some level, he did approve of this text being in the publication.

Main character is a 123215214 IQ superhuman selectively bred to be super fast and strong, but more importantly than that he can read people's emotions and thoughts by looking at their face and seeing their muscles move, hence can manipulate everyone.

Other main characters are a crazy barbarian (bit like Karsa or Conan) and a really powerful sorceror who is kind of a cuck/simp. There's also a cool and likeable ISIS tier religious zealot, a somewhat anime style "muh kekakku" notbyzantine commander, and the notbyzantine emperor who is totally insane and great fun to read.

3 female characters of note, one is an exwhore, one is a slut and one is the emperors mom who molested him when he was a kid but he kind of liked it.

Basic plot is the notChristians (who are kind of muslim) launch a crusade against the notmuslims in the middle east, 213215215 IQ superhuman is sent on a mission by his people to kill his dad who went rogue, he joins up with barbarian man who was seduced by superhumans dad and turned into a faggot and went insane because of it. Superhuman man slowly takes control of the crusade, all the other characters are involved somehow.

AND

thousands of years ago aliens from another planet landed. Their mission? Reduce the number of people on earth to below 144k so that heaven and hell would be deactived, they were all super evil and didn't want to go to hell, they created the nogod with their superpowerful science, a creature that made all children born after its creation stillborn, mankind fought this group of aliens (who have not elf and human allies) and basically got lucky and defeated them. Cuck sorceror is part of an organisation (the mandate) whose job is to keep an eye out for the return of these evil organisation (called the consult), everoyne kind of thinks the consult is a myth or long ceased to exist though. Spoiler alert, they haven't and have been planning in secret for millenia to revive the nogod, they have super advanced tech they barely understand anymore thanks to degeneration and have huge armies of evil crazy rapist orcs and ogres.

It's based and grimdark and epic fantasy, sorry for the kind of reddit summary but that's the basic idea, there's lots of people getting raped and shit and it's pretty hardcore, also the prose is great and the names are foreign and weird so prepare yourself for that.

Proyas is one of my favorite characters but he was basically a YEAH KILL EM amerimutt, even cucked out and went along with killing kellhus. He was also a pretty smug cunt to achamian a lot of the time, at least early in the books.

How long have you even been around? I don't remember seeing this much seetheposting before.
