I'm a little confused by his concept of expenditure, mainly in that he thinks we go through limit experiences with no hope of acquiring something. We have sex to feel pleasure, we go through religious ordeals to get closer to God, etc. Am I missing something here?

Unproductive expenditure, ecstacy

Once again, is ecstasy in itself not the acquisition of pleasure?

It's more than pleasure, it's jouissance - which is only felt in being rent and spent.

Even so that feeling in that moment is gained, why is the expenditure of that thing that was gained make it any more influential in the motive for going though the act in the first place?

Limit experience doesnt aim at anything, its just an expression of surplus energy. When my cat takes a shit or sniffs too much air outside and comes back he goes crazy mode running around the whole house because he has to waste his surplus excitation he got from smell or excitation of anus. Of course the cat feels something, happiness, euphoria. But the point of aimless running around isnt to get euphoric because of it. Same is with humans. When you get promoted, get a gf in the same day youll have a big surplus energy youll have to waste away. Or when Bataille talks about war lords in native america who pointlessly kill off their own animals or dump all of the teasures in the water, its an act of aimless expenditure, but if they do it in front of another leader they might gain status from it.

A limit experience isn't just something like sex or religious experiences, if that is what you are implying.

So if the intention wasn't acquisition, he considers acquisition to be a secondary concern?

Think of it as overkill waste. Like bombing a shithouse with a moab. Just expenditure. >>17393937 is pretty on point.
