Is it bad that I can't mark down the central ideas of a book? I sense that my inability to distil salient concepts from a book is impeding my understanding of difficult texts. Is there a method or habit that I can adopt that will strengthen my astuteness when it comes to key ideas?

Depends on the book.

Can't you read the book, guess as to what the underlying message was, and then check what wikipedia has to say about it? They often have the truth I think.

No, I don't need secondary sources as they only corrode your own understanding

you can try asking what you just read after every paragraph/chapter... also, have u tried rereading stuff? actually i have been thinking maybe something akin to lectio divina might be a useful thing to emulate inspired by some schizo who mentioned it

After taking notes, try narrowing them down more and more.
