Why can't they write good prose? Their prose is either underwhelming or pretentious, there's no in between.

Your premise is faulty... President Lincoln's Last Speech in 1865 makes a wonderful allusion to The Prodigal Son in reference to succeeded states. Reagan's 1981 Inaugural Address makes a vague allusion to the Armor of God in Ephesians, etc. It just isn't highly original in nature.

Didn't Henry James state that Theophile Gautier's only contributions to Philosophy were a series of genial Commonplaces? It seems like an American observation... it's not really Gautier's perspective at all, but scientific generality wants to see its dialectic filtered through a range of rhetorical effects, and this is the benumbing aspect of American prose.
