It’s a wicked life
Isn’t it?
That’s how you really feel
Isn’t it?
You’d like a different life?
Wouldn’t you?
Everything in place
It’s a wicked life
Isn’t it
Filled with good and bad
Hats in hand
I don’t blame you, William
Flesh and bone
Just like everyone
How could you have known?
Just like everyone

It’s wicked life
Isn’t it?
But the scales were tipped long before you
Shoulders weren’t meant to hold
Shoulders weren’t meant to hold
You were made to be crushed
Made to believe in love

You were built to break

Pretty good. I liked the constant imagery of the Army lurking on the steppe and the scene where the main character realizes there’s a water drain constantly dripping behind his room

i've read it several times, liked it every time and remember very little about it.

I have the impression of the book but no memory of what happens in it.

Surely you at least remember the scene where one of the garrison members dies while they try to claim a mountain for Russia and the barbarians get there first

>barbarians
It was just the people from the other country's border. The whole chapter felt like a standalone thing, considering it was about self-importance, rather than wasting your life doing shit all.

>> No.17320150

Really enjoyed it though I'd say besides the ending, the best bits were the more standalone ones like the Kafka style scene and the one in the mountain with the cute blond boy
This is retarded but I'm still not clear on where exactly the book takes place?
Is it supposed to be Italy? Russia? Russitaly? Some fictional land where people have Italian names?

Same here, but I've only read it once. Preparing for something a great portion of your life only to be denied the experience. It made me feel like I'm reading a story about myself, and that's the only reason I don't want to read it again.

Liked how conveyed the feeling of wasted years in an eternal waiting for something unclear. My favorite part is when Giovanni decided to stay the initial 4 months, the beautiful scene that he watched throught the window of the doctor's office compeled him to stay

Love it.
Reminder that if you liked it you should check out as quickly as possible The Opposing Shore by Julien Gracq.

>> No.17321296

Morricone has written a wonderful valse for a scene of the movie.
Book was excellent really atmospheric.
I've read his children book about the bear invasion and it was fun too

I enjoyed it. It's a good soldiering book, and the ending is very well put together. If you liked it OP, you should read Waiting for the Barbarians.

aren't English translations of his books kind of hard to find?
