I did until first the post started losing them, and then covid made my country stop all deliveries from UK. Now I'm waiting for the situation to clear out to try again.

I used to, but seeing as English isn't my native language there was always "translation tax" to contend with when buying books locally. Not to mention major Croatian publisher going bankrupt kinda fucked everything up on top of sad reality that most works will simply never get translated. I improved my English, went digital and never looked back

Algoritam going bust really showed how fragile publishing industry is in Croatia.
I read a lot online as well, but for some books I just appreciate having them on the shelf as well, so I started buying from Book depository. It was a really good deal, until covid butted in.

I don't know if you're also from Croatia, but our problem seems to be that what few readers there are only go for "ghostwritten celebrity X biography" kind of garbage. I frequented Algoritam bookstore years ago on weekly basis and even knew an employees who told me basically no books beyond the above were selling. Translated or native didn't seem to make a difference. I mean, it didn't help that Croatian editions had insane markups and you could buy the same book in the original language for at least 50% less, though.

I'm subscribed to the national library (its free in the US right?). I also tend to buy books a lot, but have recently started buying second hand. It felt like a waste to buy books new when I only read half of them.
I also have an ereader for English shit, as most of that is harder to get both in the library or second hand.

how the fuck do you guys store your books? Is there a cheaper and more space efficient alternative than buying a fuckoff big bookshelf?

>> No.17316850

>>17316801
Yeah, I'm from Croatia. I'm not surprised to hear that, I don't know anyone under the age of 50 that reads books for personal enjoyment, and anyone older just goes to the library. Wherever there are still books sold it's just what you mentioned - celebrity biographies, and also self-help books, celebrity cookbooks, and the usual highly advertised romance/mystery books commonly associated with reading on the beach, although it's questionable just how much these last sell considering that in times of Algoritam similar books would find themselves on special deals for some really small amount, practically for free, just so they could get rid of them.

Pull-out bookshelves if you have the room for them. Or specific places like shelves under a staircase, etc. Shelves, basically.

I never pay for books, I either use the library or borrow it from my grandparents or someone, or pirate it as a last resort. Fuck paying for books.
