A kindle and i pirate all my books kek

>> No.17306478

I read pdfs on my laptop, most fiction on my kindle, short fiction on my phone when I don't have my kindle on me. Philosophy and poetry I'll often buy in paper. If I hadn't received a kindle as a gift, I'd likely get a kobo or one of the larger screened ereaders for manga. But this topic is overplayed here, and nothing of value was ever said in these threads.

I bought an e-book reader recently at a thrift store for 7 bucks. I wanted to get one but spending 100 bucks for one triggers my "buying stuff I don't need" guilt. I initially thought it didn't work with my PC since the manufacturer stopped selling them and they only supported Win XP and Windows 7 but I changed the cable and now it works.

I'm glad it does since now I have more of an excuse to read since previously I just listened to audiobooks.

Specifically for reading manga--nope. You can and it's okay for single pages, but it's not ideal. It's best for regular books. I'd go for the Kobo Aura if you want Kobo brand and specifically want it for manga.

The screen size is pretty much the primary issue.

Although actually I think the Forma is the biggest screen, it's an inch bigger than the Libra and slightly bigger than the Aura and doing a bit of searching it seems like that's the one most people recommend as the best Kobo for frequent manga reading since it can download from Dropbox directly.

>> No.17307298

>>17307226
Most people recommend an Android based reader for manga so you can install readers and downloaders you want. Likebook Mars doesn't cost much more than the Libra and also features a larger screen.

This, what is even the point of a separate device for books? FBReader or Moon Reader and you are all set, don't even really need to buy/pirate them since they are both perfectly fine as they are. Is it American applecucks using Kindles or some shit? Can you even pirate anything on a Kindle?

>I don't even have a phone. E Ink is far more usable than LCD or OLED.
Do you mean you don't have a smartphone or just a phone in general? Becuse I find latter hard to believe unless you are asome kind of gigaNEET. And I've tried ink e-readers a few times before - didn't see any advantages over a phone screen whatsoever.
>You can pirate on a Kindle, you just need to convert epubs to mobi via calibre.
I see, guess I heard wrong then, someone told me once that they had some DRM built in and no way to bypass it.

Kindle does have DRM that may or may not be broken but that's for books you buy via Amazon. Some of the early models were more restrictive about access but nowadays they just work like a USB drive.

>And I've tried ink e-readers a few times before - didn't see any advantages over a phone screen whatsoever.
It's a reflective instead of an emissive display. It blends very nicely with the surrounding instead of blasting light in your face. It feels more like paper than a screen.
The display doesn't need power to hold an image, only to change it, therefore the devices last for weeks on a single charge.
The only disadvantages are that it's expensive and not suited for dynamic content.

>I have a landline phone but I don't carry it around.
Damn, and you have no need for a portable phone in your daily life? Do you live in a village/small town or something? That's pretty unorthodox even for those places if you live in the west.
>Some of the early models were more restrictive about access but nowadays they just work like a USB drive.
That makes sense, the last I've heard of the DRM thing was years ago.
>>17307513
>You dont use a hammer for a screw.
No, but you do use the swiss army knife for both cutting and unscrewing if it does the job perfectly well, which the phone screen does while saving you some space.
>>17307524
>It's a reflective instead of an emissive display. It blends very nicely with the surrounding instead of blasting light in your face. It feels more like paper than a screen.
Reading from a backlit screen is better for your eyes than the real paper, is it not? I can see how some people might prefer the faux paper feel, but purely from a utilitarian point of view that's not really a useful feature.
>The display doesn't need power to hold an image, only to change it, therefore the devices last for weeks on a single charge.
Reading a book has a minimal drain on the battery, and you usually have to charge your phone daily anyways. But if you have to use your phone a lot throughout the day, I can see how having an e-reader with a separate long lasting battery can be an advantage, I'll give you that.

It allows you to read under bright lighting conditions such as outside.
With a backlit screen you have to counter with brightness which only works to some degree and kills the battery.
