If you google for eliade shamanism a bit you will find a pdf of a scandinavian fellow's phd thesis on the concept of shamanism as constructed by anthropologists and historians of religion since Eliade's day and he does a comprehensive critique of all the different theories of shamanism and gives an up to date postmodern reading

But start with Eliade's Shamanism to get yourself excited at least
