Imagine being this retarded
Just because stoics claimed that their doctrines work even if gods don't exist doesn't mean they were irreligious
They were often associated with religiousness in fact
In Zeus the Tragedian, the position in favour of the Providence of the Gods is held by the stoic Timocles

Stoicism is cool hypothetically, but in real life its giga cringe. Probably the best stoics are those that never self identify and never pour over the literature.

That's true, people that talk a lot about stoicism are ironically rarely stoic. My dad is very stoic but I wouldnt know if he's ever read any of them because he's never mentioned it. He just behaves that way. Very little bothers him. I've seen him angry like three times in my entire life. Very different from ecelebs that tawk about it

>> No.17290736

I just take some things from stoicism, like the acceptance of what's outside of your control, and disregard the rest

>> No.17290737

>>17290724
If you're taking enjoyment in externals then per Epictetus you are out of your mind. There's a little wiggle room I suppose in finding "enjoyment" in God's creation, but if externals make you happy, then losing them will make you sad; that's not stoic.

>> No.17290747

> If you're taking enjoyment in externals then per Epictetus you are out of your mind
Can you refer me to a specific writing? Of course Epictetus likes to harp on about the folly of getting attached to externals, but I have trouble imagining even him saying “If you enjoy an external, you’re out of your mind.”

>> No.17290756

>>17290747
I'm synthesizing very many instances of Epictetus saying that externals are neither good nor bad. "Good and bad lie only in the will," not in externals. This is the major theme in his discourses. If externals cannot be good then how would a stoic enjoy them? Enjoying them would be judging them, and they're beyond judgment.

>> No.17290854

Stoicism has some value, but it would better to take a little of every school, than to to devote yourself to just one.
