So I was making an online reading list, and yeah it was hard to remember all the books I've read. SO I though I'd skim lit and see if there were any discussions about novels I've read that I could add to it.

>mfw when I discover for the first time, on page zero of this board, that there are fuck all threads actually about books

Pull your finger out /lit/, for fuck's sake.

And in order to not be a hypocrite, let this thread be a Robert Louis Stevenson thread, a guy who, in my opinion, doesn't get mentioned enough on this board.

Favourite works by him, for what reason, and general discussion thread, go! I liked Ollala and the Body Snatchers . Pic related.

really enjoyed that book OP
only read that however, Dr J and MR H got interesting towards the end but i preferrred 'the misadventures of john nicholson' 'markheim' and 'the body snatchers'
in comparison i didn't like DR J & MR H that much

what did you think of that collection, (once again, all i've read)

lodging the night was okay too, but fuck Thrawn Janet, really couldn't get into it, especially with the scottish language thing.

I'VE ONLY READ DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE AND THE BEACH AT FALESA. THE BEACH AT FALESA WAS A PRETTY GOOD CRITIQUE OF BRITISH IMPERIALISM AND THEIR EXPLOIT THE UNDEVELOPED NATIONS THAT THEY HAD POLITICAL AND/OR ECONOMIC CONTROL OVER. ABLE TO BE READ IN A DAY EASILY

just to expand, i thought Body-Snatchers was some real good classic horror, i'm not sure if the kinda classic campfire tale which follows a similar pattern the kinda twist ending came after this, or whether RLS was just capitalising on an already existing trend, i kinda knew where it was going but i still really enjoyed it. Also misadventures of J Nicholson was more of a comedy than a true horror to me, i mean most of the horror isn't scary but i guess that it was a different writing style or objective than what we have now, it seemed to focus less on the actual murders and murderer and all the jazz and more on the actual life on John Nicholson in a romantic sense

lodging for the night i also kinda liked but it felt like a bit of a heavy handed self-insert of the authors views (when the lodger and the old rich guy are talking)

Markheim still probs my favourite though

I liked "Olalla". I'm not sure what it was about it, maybe because it was set in Spain it was quite refreshing for a story to be told in that language but in that sunny, dry setting. Almost dreamlike. Compare to "Body Snatcher"; wet, gloomy, Victorian English town.

OP's back. Sorry guys I completely forgot about this thread.

>>1728560
I normally don't talk to trips but you're contrabootin' quite nicely. The only thing of Stevenson's that I own is the book at the top of the thread, and for some inexplicable reason I never got around to reading the main story from it... The rest I really liked. I might have read a couple of the Arabian Nights I think. I'm ashamed I haven't read "Strange Case of..." but this thread has revived my interests so I'm going to go ahead and get some of his work for my Kindle :)

yeah that's all i own too but i heard his novels are okay so i might read one of those in the future. Yeah DRJ and MR H can drag a little, i mean because everyone knows the story and everything it just seems to be taking a little _too_ long to get round to the point.
but it's not bad, enjoy it

>i normall don't talk to trips

I enjoyed j&h, but all the post-colonial apologist critics really rustled my jimmies.

It's a timeless book about human nature, not an ephemeral anti-imperial rant.

Markheim - man enters a shop in order to kill the owner and steal the money, meets a mysterious figure who talks to him about what he's going to do.

Misadventures of John N - Man leaves home town for about 10 years, comes back everyone's acting strangely, there's a murderer on the loose.

both are v good short stories.

i'm not too sure about anthologies, i've gotten those 2 in the same collection OP has, but the ISBN of my collection is
9780099528371
which is a different edition to the OP's so i wouldn't be able to say,
the misadventures of J Nicholson is about 70 pages and Markheim is about 20, you could get an E-Book to read of them maybe
