I guess English doesn't have the same connotation to weight. Lourd here means a mix of sluggish, hard to bear, suffocating.

he is talking about man of ressentiment. Because the latter cannot forget things, he can not do away with his own suffering, memory is an open wound for him as Nietzsche describes ressentiment. Because of that, man becomes heavy, he is always loaded with everything, constantly searching for an excuse to vent out and abreact. Sick people, women, especially old women are like that. Celine spent a lot of time being around sick people, since he was a doctor, so he saw the mechanism of ressentiment clearly. The faculty of forgetting, overcoming your own suffering is what lightens up the man, gives him necessary vital powers to embrace new things and enjoy the life.

So maybe "ponderousness" would have been a better choice?

Celine talks about ambition and this doesn't stem from resentment.

my point isnt that ressentment causes ambition, its the other way around, people who give into competetive and consumerist culture become resentful, since it implies a majority of envious people who are on the verge of being on the loser's side. Its really similar to Nietzsche's critique of his days german culture, both even mention alcohol as the thing that makes people heavy, for example: "How much disgruntled heaviness, lameness, dampness, how much beer is there in the German intelligence."
