About to jump in. Any tips for understanding this? Should I keep notes? Should I read the foreword?

reading this rn as well. the foreword is going to be way easier than the main text. read the commentary in the back along with the front matter. it is like a "answer key" to what he is saying

You shouldn't be asking those questions by now, anon. Is this the first Philosophy book that you are going to read?

>> No.17266739

Pretty much... aside from some Plato and Camus and I read Sophie’s world when I was 16 (lol)

Ok, anon. You got meme'd into Hegel. Nothing wrong with it. You can always read it later, but you need to get into Kant first. Get a textbook, anon. A regular Philosophy textbook, skip Platos chapter (which is probably quite long) and read everything else until Hegel, then you get to this book.

not op but is there any particular text you would recommend?

i was about to ask that as well.

Used this one Voyage of Discovery. There are plenty of those too. Anything with chronological order will be easy to 'get into Hegel.' It can be ordered by subjects too. Those are ok too.

It is a decent book, anon. A lot of people recommend it.

Just learned Hegel married some prime 18 year old pussy as and 40 year old sickly skinny fat pale man. That's based.

going to check that one out btw thanks for reminding me

>>17266776
you might not need another book, anon. Check the table of contents of any history of philosophy book and check out if there are any gaps. Sophie's world stops in what part of Philosophy? I think it is existentialism but I'm not sure.

You need to find a good commentary.

>> No.17268361

Read the intro section to his Encyclopedia Logic where he describes his entire system in about 20 pages.
If not, you will be completely lost and have zero fucking idea what he is talking about.

Genuine question, is this book even useful? I mean even if I'm gonna conduct phenomenological research... what's this book gonna add?

Does Sadler do a good job with this?

Dunno, anons. The book seems to be a bit of how you uncover it.

>Should I read the foreword?
Is this even a question when reading philosophy? Yes you should read the foreword.

Unironically his least interesting book.
His Philosophy of Right, Lectures on World History and Lectures on Aesthetics are unbelievably fascinating and all have some application to modern society.

But the foreword isn’t even written by Hegel?

>> No.17268442

>>17268437
It's written by someone who's already struggled with understanding Hegel and managed so well they list his advice and notes as part of the release itself.

>> No.17268447

>>17268437
So? It’s written by someone far more knowledgeable than you. Read it.

no in my experience. maybe for the most difficult passages.

he is too wordy to make convenient use of. the point is lost in the volume of his content.

i really really like the commentary in the back of op translation

Just read the preface

>> No.17271410

>>17271217
im 250 paragraphs in and so far the preface has been the most opaque part by a lot

he does seem to say the same thing over and over again though
