My favorite used book store is starting to sell used books near sticker price. Should I just take my business to eBay and Amazon?

A local pizza place started charging almost the same for two slices as you can buy a whole frozen DiGiorno with all toppings at Target. Screw that gouger.

Amazon and ebay are the reason why a lot of secondhand book shops are charging so much: they now have no reason to sell anything below what they could get for it online.

Otherwise arbitrage pikers will come in and buy it and try to flip it online so that makes sense, even though generally online is cheaper to begin with.

Used book stores will price their books about $1-2 cheaper than used Amazon books.

The internet and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

Bad analogy

At this point I feel like I should just pay the extra dollar and get a new copy.

if you're going to take your business elsewhere anyway you can at least make your concerns known to the owner and there's always the chance he comes to an arrangement.

It's not an analogy. I don't owe any loyalty to "local businesses".

That's not bad, just get old used books. Penguin Classics from the 70s-80s have sticker prices of like ~$4.95 assuming you're not in the market for a doorstopper.
