Colombia and LatAm history

my gf is colombian and I want to learn everything about Colombia history. do you guys have some good books about that? if they are in spanish is fine as long as the struggle to read it in the original language is worth it.
I'm also interested in the LatAm history too so please share some tips. I've read "open veins" by Galeano but you guys said that it's a commie book.
I would like to know something about Simon Bolivar too.

Read Antonio Caballero's "Colombian history and it's oligarchies" It's online but you can get a PDF and a paperback. Probably spanish only and this is specifically what you're looking for.

"Y donde está la franja amarilla" by William Ospina is a popular one. It's not much history as it is essentially bitching about why Colombia is fucked and why colombians suck.

You might find Germán Castro Caycedo interesting. He's a journalist that writes a lot about many aspects of colombian life affected by drug trade and illegal enterprises. There's one called "the witch" about a real life witch that many politicians and criminals used to consult. Not strictly history but a snapshot of the consequences of crime in contemporary Colombia.

Fernando Vallejo is another good one. He's so bitter about Colombia he renounced his citizenship in favour of the Mexican. He has some great books like "The hitmen virgin" (La virgen de los sicarios) about a group of low level hitmen during Escobar's medellin who used to pray to a virgin and have their bullets blessed before killing someone.

Aside from that I recommend "La novia oscura" By Laura Restrepo. Prostitution in small productive towns in rural Colombia.

And "La voragine" which is essentially a staple of Colombian literature, but this is incredibly advanced spanish and even annoying.
