Thanks, anon. I had my doubts about it because it was the first sonnet in alejandrinos I've written. Miguel Hernández indeed is one of my great influences, but the image of the bull was due to the need of a word that rhymed with "anto", thus "abanto", which when applied to a bull means "timid, easily frightened". I didn't it mean it as a a reference or sign of influence, but I get what you mean. If it's not a problem to you, could you tell me what you liked about it, or your interpretation of it?

I'm aware that word has a tilde, "enraiza" obviously is an instance of sinéresis. Without the sinéresis, the metre would break apart, as you pointed out in your last post.

That's alright, but I'm going for a long pause there. It's more about the musical aspect of the poem rather than the rhetorical one. At first I was going for a colon, precisely because it would show that a description or explanation follows, but I found the period to be better.

Thanks for sharing your interpretation. It's very different from what I intended: the difference but ultimate equality of the feminine (el fruto) and the masculine (la piedra). Maybe a title or an epigraph would make that more visible? Still, yours is very valid considering the images.

Also, I ended up changing line 10 one more time:

I dislike sharing my writing so I'm just going to leave the beginning to one of Rulfo's short stories because I think it's neat.

Something else we disagree on. A bad epigraph will be superfluous, but a good one will improve the text and even work as a key to interpret it (for example, the epigraphs of Gómez Dávila's Escolios). It doesn't have to do with the epigraphs themselves, but with how they are used.

I'm not so sure. I'm well aware of the semantic play you mention: that's precisely why I included it in the first line of the poem. The thing is, the image of the grava also plays with that. Dried up chabacanos (the fruit of the damasco) look like grava and they fall in autumn and winter. But the point is that the damasco tree bears gravel, and their dropping from the tree produces the "coral cacofonía" with "acorde cascajo". Its function is the same as with "cantos", although it loses the alliteration, as you said, but it develops the semantic game that was already established in the first line. It's just that I don't like that repetition when it's already in the first line. Still, I'll think about it a bit more to see whether I go with one or the other, but I wouldn't dismiss "grava" outright as you just did.

He intentado buscar al respecto en google pero lo único que encuentro son artículos escritos debido a la reciente publicación de la versión de ed. Lo que mandas no tiene que ver sobre traducciones de un dialecto a otro, sino que sobre las diferentes ediciones que hay de la misma obra. El mismo paper que mandas dice que la edición mexicana de la que estás hablando lo único que hace es corregir las muchas erratas de la edición original, pero no tiene nada que ver con "corregir" o cambiar idioscincrasias del español cubano. Honestamente anon, no me preocuparía mucho sobre esas cosas si sólo estás haciendo una lectura "casual". Sigue intentando leer Paradiso, si hubiera una traducción a algún otro dialecto del español probablemente no haría más que mutilar el texto.

Me han dicho que la de Cátedra, la de Alianza y la de Austral –según yo un profesor me recomendó ésta en específico– están todas muy buenas. Yo no pude conseguir ninguna de esas entonces terminé leyendo la traducción de Bartolomé Mitre, lo bueno de ésta es que utiliza los mismos tipos de versos que utiliza Dante, pero leí que igual ya está un poco anticuada.

Recently read and finished 100 years of solitude and loved it, trying to read through the spanish version and it's been an interesting and rewarding challenge! Any anons have recommendations for spn to eng dictionaries that are tailored more towards allusions, metaphors, or even off-the-beaten-path words, (as an example, i can't even find a spanish to english dictionary that defines one of the opening lines of the books! fusilamiento!)

If you are serious about reading in spanish (or any foreign language) you should get an ereader with a built-in dictionary. The thing pays for itself after you read 10 books or so, as ebooks are free.

And I wouldn't stress about not understanding every word in 100 años. I (Spaniard) found many words that I had never encountered before.
