Start with Brothers Karamazov because life is short, his books are long, and that's the best one.

>> No.17166768

In fact now that I think about it you should read him in reverse order of publication because he got linearly better with time.

Don’t start with TBK because it’s all downhill from there. Probably Demons

>> No.17167091

I made the mistake of reading Brothers then C&P and Brothers is just such a tour de force that everything pales in comparison. If you read C&P and then Brothers you can go from thinking "wow C&P is fantastic" to "wow I thought C&P was good but Brothers is truly one of a kind" rather than just think "this is pretty good but not as good as Brothers"

>should I start with this author's largest and most complex work?
yes that sounds like a good idea, especially outside of a classroom environment where no one can help you understand the things you missed.
Start with Notes. Then Crime and Punishment. Then take a break and read something else. Read The Idiot and Demons at some point in the next couple years and then eventually, once you've hit middle age, you might be ready for Brothers Karamazov.

You just read the best first. Go on with the other if you enjoyed it
