I've published short fiction and criticism, and have written various stories at various stages of completion (particularly good ones of 15k and 12k words) and have three novels in rough draft at 26k, 55k, and 56k words. I have also written 200+ poems but do not consider them very good. I believe within the decade I will have published all three novels and hopefully a short story collection. I also have over a million words of journals which will one day serve the foundation for my autobiography.

I only decided to start writing about a year ago and those first experiments showed me that my style is inconsistent and my understanding of language was too limited to understand why and isolate what is unique and worthwhile within my usage, my ambitions far outweighed my skills. So I have spent around 6 to 8 hours a day for the past year working on my technique, doing exercises, dissecting the works which inspire me, researching and furthering my understanding of the English language. I am mostly over those first hurdles and have moved onto structure and plotting, I am quite happy with my progress and am in no real rush, I gave myself a decade to complete my rather ambitious doorstopper and the selection of short stories which would evolve out of things culled from the novel but are still worth while and strong enough to stand on their own. My last exercise before commencing full bore with my writing is to fully outline IJ in a way which shows its structure, I am not sure if this is even possible but it certainly is enjoyable and I am learning a great deal.

A great deal of my writing exercises are actually for my novel, but I am unsure if I will revisit any of this work or start fresh, we will see how I feel about it when I finish outlining/plotting. All in all, I am really enjoying the process and writing, getting quite excited to start seriously focusing on my novel.

I'm a writer myself and this can be a bit tricky.

The trouble is that if you put your short story up on the internet there's a ton of journals and websites that will count it as "previously published," which means they won't accept it for publication themselves. So actually getting criticism without invalidating your shot at getting published can be difficult.

My advice would be to find some kind of private forum for communication. A Discord, an IRC, a private message board. Something like that. Something where your story can be critiqued that also keeps it away from prying eyes.

NOT /lit/. 4chan is fully public, magazines and websites will flip their shit if they do a Google search and find your story here.
