1. select words that are seldom used in the first place
2. select words that refer to or are in relation to as little things as possible
3. choose them from categories as far apart as possible

this yields the highest score. using words such as God that refer to a lot of things and in a lot of contexts is a mistake.

I never understand these tests. You're not prepared the first time you do it, so you redo it and turn on your brain a bit more, maybe think of things before you start. I did that and scored in the mid 90s the 2nd and 3rd time.

It's about proximity. Something which talks about gallows is also likely to talk about wardship. It's also likely that close by to both those words are words like "judge", "courts", "trespass", because those are common to newspapers and legal writing.
Most things that talk about religion will also talk about how it spreads and is practiced. You're also going to find nearby words like "pamphlet", and "conversion". The secret cult will not be discussed in the texts they are using as references with anywhere near the degree of regularity that newspapers or books talk about worship or dissemination. The word worship is not solely used by secret cults. It's used much more commonly by people not in secret cults.

Yes, it is. A "ward of the court" is a common phrase which has survived past hanging. Relationships are also described in court. And in books. Probably one of the most common places for modern readers to come across the term "ward", meaning foster child or dependent, is in Agatha Christie, who is certainly not devoid of gallows.

If you just type in crime or legal terms, you'll see why wards have a lot to do with courts. Ward doesn't directly mean "foster-child", because it's a a legal term which encompasses much more than just fostering. It involves a lot more kinds of dependent, such as incapacitated adults. The quiz also doesn't let you choose one meaning from all meanings (so hospital wards, city wards, warding off trespassers, etc. will also show proximity)
If you put in "flute" it will not make a differentiation between the instrument, the glassware, the architectural term, or the verb; if you put in another word which falls into those contexts you'll see proximity. "Flute" and "cornice" will show proximity, just like "flute" and "champagne", or "flute" and "banjo" will.

Given the data from this thread I did a little toying around with my original words and got a score above 100. It doesn't count lots of words. Even words that you would see far more commonly than those. Surprised mudlark didn't make it in. Pooter might count as technical, but you're likely to find it in children's activity books for younger ages than solenoid, which is definitely more technical than it.

The higher scores in the thread have mostly very basic words. (Box, pistol, caption, cartridge, taxi are in the two posts with over 100 averages). The point is to find words which would rarely be used within 100 words of each others in any context. Agate, alcove, reliquary are all more complex and rare than caption, cartridge, and taxi, but you'll find a lot of agate reliquaries in alcoves, so you're not going to get a high score with them. The quiz is measuring the distance between words, so you can brute force it to a higher score if you can think in registers unlikely to come in contact.
