Read The Zanzibar Chest by Aidan Hartley. Dude's a gifted journalist who had a knack for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Every fucked up thing you've heard about Africa in the 20th century, he was there writing about it.
A similar book would be The Shadow of the Sun, although Kapuscinski is not a compelling writer.

Also some recs that are more anthropological in outlook -- The Innocent Anthropologist by Nigel Barley and Paul Stoller's writings about sorcery in Niger. Barley was an Oxbridge scholar who'd been in the field for years and pissed everyone off when he finally snapped and published a book portraying the natives as the helpless children they really are. Stoller takes a different approach; he saw credulity of superstition as a valuable research tool, which took him down one rabbit hole after another. Very entertaining reads both of those.

Finally some books by Africans themselves:
Wole Basedinka is an astonishing writer; of all the Nobel laureates I've read, he's most deserving of recognition
Amadou Hampate Ba is the most beloved writer of West Africa's cultural heartland. The Fortunes of Wangrin is a staple of African literary studies.
Ferdinand Oyono is also worth mentioning as a personal favorite; The Old Man and the Medal is a classic.
Since the Congo is important to understand yet doesn't have much literature, The Bend in the River by V.S. Naipaul is worth reading; it portrays that incomprehensible mess with the clarity that only a novel could provide.

Nigeria doesn't interest me so I can't rec much from there, but it's obviously the literary powerhouse of the continent. The number of acclaimed writers it's produced is impressive, and what I have read is very good. I don't think you can go wrong reading any of them.

there is a more fundamental concept known as G standing for "Spearman's General factor of cognitive ability" which is highly genetically correlated, IQ scores are really the best proxy we have to estimate G
I used the analogy of height because it's quite a good match up but with a much more visible outcome.
We could discuss Richard Lynn's methodolgy but that is a well validated side point. (funnily enough, wichart tried to accuse him of biased sampling which turned out to just be projection of his own sampling bias, lol)
