Salmasius, who spread the rumour about Milton selling his buttocks, also wrote that Milton went blind because God hates him. Milton had lots of enemies because he supported the king’s execution, so everyone began parroting Salmasius and telling Milton that his blindness was a sign that God hated him.

That seemed to have really gotten under Milton’s skin more than anything else they said about him since was super religious, so he would try to pick out quotes from the bible that showed God loved the blind, such as the incident where Jesus told a blind man he had committed no sin and then healed him.

It was really quite pathetic and sad when one thinks about it, but the arguments in the 17th century tended to be 4chan tier. Milton literally told Salmasius that he was ruled by his bitchy wife and
used all types of insults against him, calling him “a talkative ass sat upon by a woman’, ‘a eunuch priest, your wife for a husband’, an ‘agent of royal roguery’, a ‘hireling pimp of slavery’, ‘a gallic cock’ and ‘a dung-hill Frenchman’ and Milton called Salmasius’ wife a ‘barking bitch.’ I have no idea why Milton was attacking his opponent’s wife, but then Milton tended to dislike women and thought they were inferior.
