Hey /lit/,

I'm sure countless numbers of you have played this game before. No doubt you are aware that it is stuffed with a great deal of in-game text (for lack of a better term). Do you think that, ignoring the _game_ aspect of the Elder Scrolls series, one could consider these works on-par with what is considered "good literature"?

For those of you unfamiliar with Morrowind, here is a sample: http://www.imperial-library.info/content/morrowind-thirty-six-lessons-vivec

(It's Holy Scripture, and writer(s) who outlined it were clearly influenced by several historical texts, like the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Bhagavad Gita.)

Morrowind is quite possibly my favorite RPG.

The books/texts were a great addition to the game.

Outside of the game it really doesn't hold up.

my favorite game
even if i was impressed by the dedication of the game developers, i didn't spent much time reading the books in the game as i do with real books

There was some cool stories. Definatly my favourite game ever. I think they realeased some novels set in the tes world but I've not read them.

Just one so far. Its by greg keyes I believe. I own it i just cant locate it on my shelves. It was cool but it didnt feel like the elder scrolls. It was basicaly extra terrestrial. It even more different than the shivering isles was for oblivion.

on topic: I think most of the books are unimpressive, being so short. Nice idea - really immersive within the game. But as actual writing they are nothing outside of the game world.

I might check it out then once I've read all the many other books on my list.

Although I was hoping for some kinda dune style epic set in morrowind featuring a rich cast of characters in the major factions with various plots that interwined.

heck a good novel following roughly the plot of the game would be sweet.

Easily my favorite game. The lore is fucking expansive. The unique thing about the story is that you have to read it. There's not really any gameplay; you're just walking from character to character, finding shit out. When interacting with a character, you'll see a number of different keywords which you can talk about. You'll select one keyword, and you then read the character's explanation of the keyword. Sometimes you'd get 1000 + word response for a single keyword, and that response would have 15 different keywords inside of the initial response. And all of those keywords have keywords, and you can start to see how easily you would become immersed in the plot. It's sort of like when Deep&Edgy leaves a thread to look up a critical term on wikipedia that somebody calls him on but the description of the term contains more terms that he doesn't know, so he has to follow the links to all those terms and then they have their own terms and when he finally understands it and makes his point after a 25 minute hiatus, the discussion is over. Other games have this feature too, but Elder Scrolls was the first to do it, and Morrowind's was definitely the most comprehensive. It's like playing an epic.
