It’s a tie between multiple anime’s but I’ll do this since it pairs well.

The anime is filled to the brim with Rosicrucian and Kabbalistic references and it’s actually subtle enough about it that if you didn’t know about these things, you’d never know it was being referenced. It’s also incredibly comfy.

You can't talk about these books on /lit/ because everyone there is a elitist who only cares about reading "fancy" novels by dead people to show off to their internet friends because they have no real friends.
I read all these books and yes there are some spelling issues, but so what? The story is compelling. It's a fun light read. The perfect christmas gift. I bought copies for all my friends and family. I already gave my dad his.
"Wow that was really good" says Dad Joseph.
"Yeah and there only 99 cents on your Kindle reading device" I retorted.
Dad's eyes blinked.
"Wow I don't believe it" he replied in disbelief. "That's less than, the same price you would pay for a cheeseburger, except you can't enjoy a cheeseburger more times than once like you can with these books"
My mouth laughed at dad's joke and his arms did a hug on me. This series of interconnected books which can be read in any order have the power to make people, laugh and bring families together. Can Shakespeare do that? No.

Lots of favorite series but they are all pleb tier. For one, each of the characters has a personality and color scheme directly based on a sephira, so really you’re looking at the sephiroth in interaction.

The primary Rosicrucian allegory is of the alchemical red king and white queen, which are the king of the red rose and the white rose/lily. There are many false brides and false princes/kings, the true King is the messiah which is also the masculinity. The sword is the alchemical symbol for the sun, masculinity, power and the redeeming force.

In my interpretation the reason Utena failed in redeeming all of the characters and she isn’t able to truly solve it all, is that anthy wasn’t the true rose bride (anima Mundi, the human soul, etc) or more specifically, she wasn’t the entirety of it. Rather anthy and Utena are both one human soul trying to redeem itself without the messianic force. This messianic force would have most likely been Touga(who’s virility reflects the Pan myth, the solar phallus in general)

Akio is actually Lucifer, a false messiah, because he promises ascent to all of them, and like the Lucifer pentagram formula in Rosicrucianism has the capacity to show someone the infinity of reality (the end of the world) but hasn’t the power to actually redeem, this is why he tries to bind them and molests them, which is why he is 1=1 with the Devil tarot card.

This is why the only way Utena/anthy are able to attain isn’t redemption but abandonment, a kind of ascetic world-denial. Because she fails as the redemption of the world/anima Mundi, this is why all of the characters in the end repeat their same cycle.

Cycles and repetitions are a key element in the anime because why? The “revolution” is the revolution of the worlds, the planets around the sun, the turning of the wheel of samsara, but also the capacity for genuine change and a breaking of the cycle. Thus she’s the revolutionary girl, who has the power either to change the cycle or repeat it again or to perfect it.

This is most evident in the major battle scenes by the repetition of music and scenes revealing they are in a purely allegorical/mythic place; this is why you have the heavenly castle which is revealed to be nothing but an illusion (the conception of god and heaven being the most major division from heaven; see apophantic mysticism of the likes of Dionysius)

Hell, listen to the music that plays, final apocalypse, references to Swedenborgian mysticism, the motif of the union of opposites is perpetual throughout it along with references to the gnostic deity abrasax which is the union of all opposites.

The “egg” which is spoken of is the world as multiplicity and the soul becomes the deity by integration of these aspects. Each of the sephiroth (rose colored characters) seeks to become the major deity, the union of opposites by attaining the spirit of the world (anthy)

Note in Rosicrucian and Hebrew Kabbalah, the messiah is the sephira of daat which is ever in perfect Union with Saturn/the creative illusionary principle, it is only when Adam and Eve eat the fruit that daat descends into creation and daat the messiah becomes a void, an abyss which corrupts the saturnine zone into a hellish void, literally Hell in Jacob boehme’s work.

The harmonization of all of these spheres and the descent and return of the messiah is what actually redeems the tree by reforming Daat (by all of the fallen being married) and thus raising back, which is what would have been needed to save anthy/akio.

However, Utena didn’t rescue/correct the internal relations of each of the sephiroth, their internal psycho-spiritual dysfunctions remained. She never purified any of them. By the end of the series because she was only interested in herself and in anthy, and she didn’t seek to benefit the world, she and all else failed and she “escapes” but she escapes as an arahant, a world denier. In asian mysticism mystical paths are called “vehicles” this is why they have those vehicle transformations in the anime. Akio and his red car represent the phallic force, his capacity to tell people he can make them as gods. But he is not the true prince. This is why his sword fails at the end.
all in all it’s a great anime and it’s subtle enough that if you didn’t know about Kabbalah or hermeticism or Rosicrucianism you wouldn’t catch it. But it’s also blatant enough (singing about Swedenborgian mysticism of the union of opposites, talking about abrasax, the whole plot being about the redemptive prince and the Rose marriages.

It’s pretty clear.

There’s even more elements which breaking down each episode can do, example even something as basic as the chimp pet is a reference to the ape of thoth which is to say, how the natural world through the sounds and confusions hears the words of the savior as if obscured by the howling of a wild and mad ape.

It’s the same reason why in the holy mountain movie the messiah is given a woman and a chimp (except in the holy Mountain, the adept doesn’t fail in his pursuit of redemption. Utena’s the account of a failed adept, holy mountain of a successful one.)

The symbolism being fairly obvious or even on the nose sometimes, I was more impressed by the general composition, the way the visual direction and the soundtrack created a truly unique atmosphere that I've never managed to find in any other anime so far.
I guess that's a disappointing answer, but I'm not much of a plotfag. I prefer to just experience shows in terms of atmosphere rather than by analyzing their themes.
