FWIW, this isn't the best board for this question because you're mostly asking it to other pseuds. Of course they're gonna recommend more books and more information. You'd probably have a better shot of a legit answer on something like >>>/out/
To be a pseud is to approach life through your idea of what things are rather than facing things directly. Trying to fix this with knowledge is going to thicken the bug-splatter caked onto your front windshield. You need a windshield wiper more than anything. Go eat an apple or take a bath or something without applying any effort. The taste of the apple or the feeling of the bathwater is self evident--it doesn't require further investigation. Thinking about the perception is no different than picking a scab. Don't interfere, don't contrive. Likewise trying to put a stop to things is like warring in the name of peace.

Fear of pseud-ness is usually a fear of inauthenticity, but ironically the pursuit of authenticity is always (and visibly) inauthentic. The more you read the more you become aware of the sheer amount of knowledge out there and you'll feel simultaneously humbled and more intelligent. Communist theory, the stuff you find on those charts. There are many issues with it, but many make for pseudry in my opinion.

Aspect 1, the foundations.
Marxist theory is so garbled that building anything on it is a Herculean effort. I mean, after all these years, we can't even agree on whether Marx HAD an LTV. Secondly, Marx's arguments (and in particular this seems to have stemmed from the Hegelian History parts) facilitate anti-empiricism. Communist theory is always 10% shallow data and 90% (mis)attribution of this small datapool to the throes of le late stage capitalismus.

Aspect 2, the product.
This makes for theory works that are both overcomplicated and extremely shallow, while having dubious empirical validity. Take Fisher, he has a passage on overdiagnosing mental health. Firstly, this is an empirical issue: the logical next question is "give us data that can paint a picture that explains WHY this is happening". But ok, suppose the data does not exist. Fisher seems to claim, through a sequence of obnoxious pop-culture references, that this is somehow related to "muh late stage capitalism".
Ok, not only is this a boring and predictable thesis, but it is dubiously supported by the data we DO have (like the fact that mental health diagnoses have risen across the entire western world, including scandanavia, and so there seems to be no link to degree of capitalism). This is about as much of an argument as "da joos did it lole" is, just cloaked in the language of dialectics.

>> No.17114623

>>17114569
(cont.)
This is just an example of course, but it is representative of the larger issues with theory, (retarded monomania, dubious coherence, rejection of empiricism in favour of vague generalities).
For another great example, see: "Society of the Spectacle"

The worst part about theory though, is, in my opinion, the fact that their simple theses (which are actually often somewhat correct, capitalism does suck pp) have been subsumed by better and more coherent theories. I mean, the entirety of third positionism (inculding anarchism), in all its denominations, pressupposes the theses of theory. In that sense, all of third positionism stricly dominates "theory". If you can understand the dozen or so sub-theses of "le capitalism bad", then the texts that ought interest you aren't "theory", but stuff on the third position, because every third positionist worth his salt takes "le capitalism bad" to almost be self evident.

Of course, there are some theorists who do also propose anarchy or whatever, but the kind of book we refer to by "theory" is often this kind of "le critique of capitalism" book, which seems to have no value (Fisher, Society of the Spectacle). Suppose "le capitalism bad" isn't already self-evident to you because you're a lolbert or whatever, well then these critiques aren't even good critiques for the reasons mentioned in my first post. If you already know that capitalism bad, on the other hand, then these books never even had a chance to give you anything of value beyond a vaguely interesting, extremely tenuous thesis on why this particular kind of capitalism bad.

The entire western world is capitalistic, including Scandinavia

>> No.17114814

>>17114751
Yes. That’s why the hypothesis that all the world’s evils can be attributed to capitalism isn’t empirical: it’s untestable. But beyond that, between the different economic systems we have within capitalism there seems to be no evidence to suggest that overdiagnoses relate to this variable. I don’t care about the completely autistic (on both sides) “Scandanavia is/not Socialist” debate. My point is that Fishers point is not only widely untestable, but to the degree that related claims are sort of “testable”, they do not yield the results he would want them to yield. We don’t need to argue about how capitalist scandinavia is for this to be the case.
