Why does it make people from all across the political spectrum seethe so much? It's like democracy has become some kind of sacred cow and people lose it at the slightest criticism of it (even though it is demonstrably failing miserably).

There are absolutely political ideologies that are critical of democracy, almost everyone is critical of the type of democracy in Plato’s Athens. And what do you mean that democracy is failing miserably? Which variant of democracy? Are you from the US and are you only talking about right/left politics?

All of this is moot though because over 2000 years later people like OP still fail to understand Republic.

It's easy. Plato is the father of Western civilization. Everything is built on top of Plato. Our government system, our worldview, the economy, everything. In recent years, the world has increasingly turned chaotic and more connected. Plato doesn't excel in such a messy world. Western civilization is running on its last fumes.
