What is the one work/writer that you have read where once you put them down you thought, "Okay, whoa, I seriously feel much smarter having read that. I'm grateful I read that because I am now a more thoughtful person." kind of feel?

What book/author has had a lasting intellect impact on you?

Is this chart supposed to represent merely knowing about things or actually being a believer of those things? Mandela effect is definitely reddit. There seems to be a mixture of real world events like JFK, and ontological proposals, like Earth being a square or an ice ball. These three theories should be in reddit. Things like synchroncity and subliminal messages should be at least in schizo, because for one to believe them they would not act like a normal person, or participate in the same normal life like everyone else. In the 8th stage, everything listed is basically inconsequential.

As someone who's done amateur boxing and has undergone extensive training to even be mediocre (which I am) I can safely say that even a mediocre boxer is still a deadly threat to most normal people walking around day to day. With that in mind you'll often see that serious boxers of any caliber will go out of their way to avoid a fight in real life, both to save their hapless would-be victim, and to save themselves from an almost guaranteed murder charge.
With all of that said every time I see this image I want to punch this man in the face as hard as I can as many times as I can until everything above his clavicle is a fine red paste spackled with bone.
Like there's a part of me that wants to know where this guy lives so that I can actively avoid him because I know, if I were in a situation where he was in my presence, that as soon as he smacked his faggy lips and said, in his whiny, nasal voice, "because uuuhhhh, racism," I wouldn't be able to stop myself. I just wouldn't be able to stop what I can and would do to him and it genuinely scares me. And even if it were at some party and all of his equally faggy, testosterone-deprived friends grabbed at me and kicked me, they wouldn't be able to get me off his body until every neuron of his brain was cold and disconnected in a pudding that was once his brain. Only then would I allow them to feebly pull me from his corpse.

Because it correlates at a rate of 0.3(the lowest possible correlation to still technically be a weak correlation)to wider success. Because intelligence is polygenetic.
Because there are too many variables in every massive test grouping, because hard work is the key to gaining knowledge even for naturally gifted people.

I read Schopenhauer’s collected essays over the course of a summer while I was painting houses at 19. The only reason I picked it up was because my Dad had a copy filled with his notes written in the margins. I don’t know if it made me smarter so much as it made me more aware of how nuanced the thoughts of legitimately intelligent people are. The clarity of his writing made me realize how trash a lot of my education was. It made it seem like everyone else was tripping over their words.

Taleb's example is still really good: If there are strong cofactors between compared populations, causal relationships are extremely difficult to establish, even with strong correlation and seemingly obvious justification. If you give a sample of 10 people, 3 of whom are braindead, an IQ test and then a skill test, IQ will positively correlate with skill regardless of the performance of the 7 healthy people because no matter the healthy persons do, the braindead people will score 0 on both tests.

Obviously some persons are more intelligent than others. I even believe that some races as a whole are more intelligent than others, it's obvious just from looking at their basic anatomy that human brain structure is not identical among different subpopulations or even within the same subpopulation. But IQ is a poor measure of this, and doesn't necessarily reflect real performance. Even if you're intellectually stupid, being wise enough to execute plans properly can lead to much higher performance, and ridiculous stubbornness has gotten a lot of people to finish lines "beyond" their ability.

The differences in outcome between people with 100IQ and 140IQ(eg in math or physics programs) are not attributable to brain damaged people skewing the results, since the 100IQ people are of course not brain-dead.

>> No.17083896

>>17083876
You missed the point. Brain damage is just an example to illustrate the phenomenon. What happens if the people who perform poorly in math or physics are instead just very lazy? They're also not going to perform well on IQ tests, and they're not going to seek out the kind of activities that will improve cognition.

>> No.17083922

>>17083896
Even if IQ measures in part a kind of intellectual laziness it would still be useful. It might be a poor indicator but it's still quite good.

>> No.17083944

>>17083896
I mean if it were that we'd still be getting useful information, since the two would operate in effect rather similarly. I don't believe I have missed the point though about Taleb's specific brain-dead argument, I think it is refuted by the differences between people who are not brain-dead.
