What's the general opinion on Tom Bombadil?

based, excluding him is one of the main reasons the movies are shite

He's a pretty normal character for Hobbit/LOTR, but just like Radagast it's confusing that he does nothing when shit hits the fan and just chills somewhere.

I have absolutely no idea why people say it's a slog to read his chapters they aren't even that long.

Come on now, the movies are pretty great. Excluding based Tom Bombadil was definitely a mistake, though

He makes sense within the text of The Lord of the Rings, and I definitely never saw him as a pointless side story. But adapting a book, and three big books at that, you have to make cuts unfortunately. By the medium of film and how film narratives are written/staged, Tom Bombadil's section would've drastically halted the flow, tone, and run time of the Fellowship of the Ring

The existence of Tom seems to imply some kind of multiverse theory in the Ring books. It's mentioned he wasn't created along with Middle Earth, the Maia were surprised to find him there, and they consider his power almost infinite or without known limits.

Fits the first book perfectly.
Feels out of place in the complete lore thing of it.
Makes sense when you consider the whole work and how it all came together with hobbit strider, and all that stuff.

The Adventures of Tom Bombadil is an amazing poem, highly recommended for all you Bombadil lovers.

I reread LOTR last year and Tom's chapters were actually some of my favorites.

The chapter where all the hobbits are sitting in Tom's house and he's telling them stories, as the rain falls outside and the fire burns, is legitimately fucking incredible. I was awed by that chapter, there's something very powerful about it.
