Drop the demon fighting and you basically have the Picaresque novel. That would include several classic authors.

Henry Fieldings works.
Bay Ganyo by Konstantinov was quite good.

As for one about fighting demons I found a forum discussion about a series of fantasy works called Felix Castor about a street smart exorcist.
Yusukes a great protag and I always found the street punk with a heart of gold relatable.
