>born into dirt-poor working-class family
>father walked all day to the city to get some teeth pulled, couldn't afford anaesthesia
>staging avant-garde plays by 18
>witnessed the May 68 riots
>spent decades smuggling philosophy, bibles, and literature into the eastern bloc
>impressively wide understanding of philosophy, history, music, architecture, art, literature, and politics
>wrote dozens of books, some pitched at an academic level, others for a lay reader
>tried to start a magazine of conservative philosophy and thought, had to write the bulk of the articles under pseudonyms because he couldn't get any backers
>blacklisted and harangued out of academia
>composed sonatas
>helped redesign cities in bombed-out Syria
>incredible life that is usually boiled down to the tobacco column and numerous snippets and columns, most of which are taken out of context

The guy's life was pretty amazing, especially for a philosopher. Anyone read his short story book, Souls in the Twilight? Is it any good?

Oh and forgot to mention, ended up on a first-name basis with many leading politicians in the post-Soviet eastern bloc - because they attempted his clandestine lectures.

He forgot to mention that the Hungarian government finances a foundation to preserve his legacy and uses his works to spread non-brainwashed ideology. Actually on Hungarian scale it is pretty big.

Pass.
He was still based (for an academic) and his conception and discussion of beauty is great though.

It's been a while since I last watched it, I remember Roger responds to Hitchens here (where Hitchens himself is responding to the idea that you can't have as much beauty, sense of wonder, etc without religion):

It's the Radcliffe Camera at Oxford University.
It's very dry to read. I had read some of his more recent books and found them very accessible but The Aesthetics of Architecture was written forty years ago and is for a more academic audience. My knowledge of architecture and aesthetic philosophy is okay but there's a lot of stuff in there that I had to look up because I wasn't familiar with it. If you've got a handle on aesthetic philosophy, Kant especially, and you are familiar with Architectural theory (as I recall there's a lot about renaissance architecture) then you'll be fine.

This, he received an apology from only one, another gave a half assed one and the third didn't bother.

And can you believe that "journalist" kid actually celebrated getting him ousted? Pic related.
