As bad as this is, it’s still better than people who judge literary works based on their social value and adherence to the ideology of the ruling class in order to condemn or praise the author for their acquiescence or lack thereof to the current social order, a phenomenon that has entirely dominated the university’s critical approach to literature since at least the 50’s if not way earlier and has now only infected normie thought to deeper degrees everyday.

At this point, I’m thankful if people talk about the characters and the plot, at least they’re talking about the fucking book.

If you're talking about the novel form, character and plot are of the essence; they're what characterizes the form.

That said, classical literature is, of course, not limited to the novel form. (And indeed, depending on what you mean by "classical literature," it may not even *include* the novel.)
