Reminder that Pride & Prejudice is okay, but her best book is Emma.

Her best is Mansfield Park stupid faggot. I'll forgive you since you've probably only read P&P and Emma. Persuasion is better than them both as well.

This is the obvious pick, my guy (and I agree because I'm boring). However, I'd love if someone could explain to me why some academics say Mansfield Park or Persuasion are her best works.

Gotta disagree anon. Pride and Prejudice has more to say about human relationships and the story never gets boring. I like Emma a lot, but there are a few parts of it that drag.

mansfield park is her most complex but fanny is her worst protagonist, which ruins it tbqh
emma is her most comedic and is classic plot.
persuasion is her most romantic, but not that good desu.
pride & prejudice is her most perfect, a perfect marriage between wit and romance.
haven't read sense & sensibility yet.

Good takes. Don’t read sense and sensibility if you want to keep enjoying Austen. It sucks :). Also Northanger abbey is fun, but I just felt confused by it. Like, I couldn’t really wrap my head around it being by Austen. I hear lady Susan is good though.

i found persuasion to be her best. P&P + Emma are also great, near-perfect novels - S&S somehow nowhere near the level of them. Just got Mansfield Park and excited to read
