How important is it to know Thucydides and Herodotus?

I have no problem reading Aeschylus, Euripides, Sophocles, Aristophanes but this history shit drags and doesn't seem relevant at all to later literature

The works of Herodotus and Thucydides are classics in political thought, philosophy and strategy, and provide invaluable historical context for all of the Western tradition. Thucydides was also heavily influenced by Euripides.
They are also very entertaining reads!

Why would a historian have been influenced by a dramatist? It always made more sense to me to streamline it to

>Spenser
>Shakespeare

>Pascal
>Voltaire
>Goethe

And proceed from there accordingly with Plato, Aristotle, Augustine interspersed

Wouldn't it be better to group them by era? I mean, before jumping from classical Athens to the Late Middle Ages, some philosophical, historical and religious context would be useful, if not necessary.
