What was the point of portraying Braz Cubas as dead and narrating from beyond the grave?

Besides being a cool and new gimmick, if he's dead there's no point in having hope or trying to hide any shameful events. He can be as honest as possible, so much that he portrayed his life as it was, a mediocre and uneventful series of nothing. He's got nothing to lose.

No problem, anon. I really like the cynicismof it all. For most of us life will be like Braz's, mediocre. And he was so disgusted by it all that, even not achieving enything, his small victory was not bringing another being to the spiteful existence. It's one of the best last lines in all of literature.
