Hey /lit/, first thread here. I'm torn between buying DUNE or Hyperion, I know very little about either. Which would you recommend and why?

Definitely Hyperion. Much of the success of Dune was because when it came out it had no real competition. It was a unique grand sweeping low tech SF novel that was acceptable to non genre fans. By simply banning all mention of technology by making it forbidden in the story and focusing on the human aspect he overcame the poverty of the prose and other faults and kickstarted the sales avalanche that made it a classic. Hyperion is better in every way.

Hyperion is famous for the story of the first character. It's a great opening to the book but the rest is forgettable. Dune is better.

Pretty damn fun so far. It requires a lot of attention for the names and concepts, but besides that, it is very brainless.

the Priest's tale is reason enough to buy Hyperion. Get ready for some pretty novel concepts as far as Sci Fi goes, just don't expect the series to hold up past Fall of Hyperion.

The story is ok I guess, but the writing is beyond dull, don't understand how the massive Dune fans (ie not really avid readers) managed to get through it in the first place

start with Hyperion. only read the sequel if you want to experience an amazing drop in quality.
then read Dune. I recommend you read Messiah too, to finish Paul's story. If you really liked it, continue reading Frank's sequels.

The rest don't get mentioned as often and if you plan to read the rest, I wouldn't go beyong the 6th which is what Herbert originally wrote.

Everyone here who puts forth very strong opinions on a book refuses to explain how they came to that conclusion. I'm convinced that these people either didn't understand the books or are outright lying about having read them at all.

Ignoring the last two books because they shouldn't have been written, they're not really connected other than the Shrike being able to remove them. The AI core created the cruciforms to turn human beings into processors, essentially. The Shrike was created to serve a different purpose, which is to cause enough pain to lure the human God out. The idea being that because God has empathy he would be susceptible to human suffering.
