It's Sunday and it's advent season. Give me the most Christian books of all time.

I'm open to Biographies, prayer books, doctrine, poetry, apologetics, classic fantasy with metaphysics in them, etc.

Try to convert me.

not OP but I basically want the same thing. I used to be religious as a child but got turned away in my teens. I'm very skeptical so if I read the bible right now I'd be too closed off I feel to gain anything from it. at the same time I want to try opening my mind more but I don't know where to start. Any tips?

Where do you stand politically? Easier to make recommendations that way. In general, I would say reading about the saints is important. Learning how pure and honorable of a man Aquinas was compared to many modern philosophers is pretty convincing imo

Pic related has a pair of meditations & prayer for every day. Each day is fairly short, 2-3 pages. The author was a Carmelite priest and quotes from Saints John, Theresa, and Therese extensively. Since the liturgical year just started now is a perfect time to pick it up. There’s a pdf of the edition published by TAN on archive which follows the traditional calendar.

Read the Letters of Samuel Rutherford. Very pastoral. There happen to be 365 extant letters so I read one every day as a devotional.

Here ya go anon. This guide will come in handy.
I suggest reading C.S. Lewis and G.k. Chesterton first. If you want something more from a more rational perspective, read Lee Strobel. If you want literary works, read the Lord of the Rings or The Silmarillion.

Read this book slowly in a spirit of prayer and meditation. It's pages are the author's body, its meaning is his soul. Whoever prays it, the author prays with him in heaven. For centuries people have kissed this book, placed it under the mattress or pillow of sick people, recited certain chapters to avert natural disasters or heal illness. You can find it online here.

Religionbros, why is it that the most important facts of human life are transmitted via the least compelling sources of knowledge? No other field of human inquiry seems to be as obscure and unknowable as that of religion and morality.

First thing to do is buy a Bible and start going to a church. There is no such thing as a Christian who is separate from the body of Christ, so everything will only make sense if you actually spend time with Christians. Apart from reading the Bible you a couple recommendations to look at:

Historicity of the resurrection: The resurrection and the son of God by N.T. Wright will probably prevent you from falling back on the alternative explanations for the resurrection, so I'd start there. Tom also has much more accessible books, and lots of them, so just follow your interests.

Intellectual credibility of Christianity: Probably reasonable faith by W. Craig is a good overview. It really depends on what your personal qualms are with Jesus' message to recommend books.

But like I said if you really want to know then just get yourself to a local church. Life with God isn't about reading or posting on the internet.

Not the guy you're replying to, but I was gifted a Bible recently and I figured I should just start with Genesis and read it in order. Was I mistaken? What's a good reading order?
I'm not a Christian but would like to read the Bible with an open heart and see if it gives me faith.

The New Testament is unashamedly steeped in the Jewish story, and Jesus directly claimed to be the fulfilment of Israel's law. I'd recommend reading the New Testament first but you haven't lost anything by gaining some familiarity with the OT.
