Just finished reading Richard Morgan's Takeshi Kovacs novels. Gotta say, out of all three, I think Altered Carbon was the best because it did the most with the "sleeving" concept and had the more street level, character driven story out of the trilogy, which are the kind of stories I like. Broken angels was well written, but it feels completely tangential in the grand scheme of the books as a whole, didn't really care for the central plot, though there were also good moments. The second book is kind of redeemed by the third book because it reveals more detail into why Tak was in the position he was in at the beginning of the novel. While I feel like the Woken Furies is the second best in the trilogy, I was disappointed way more wasn't done with the concept of Kovacs b eing hunted by his younger self. The conflict did have a satisfying conclusion, with Kovacs finally letting go of his self-hatred and walking away from his past, but I wish that the book was structured in a way that it focused on both incarnations of Kovacs. My favorite moment in the first book was when Kovacs double sleeved and had that conversation with himself in the Hendrix about his past and his feelings towards Ortega, which brought up interesting insights on the mind and how the physical body is an integral part of that. It was cool to see how despite sharing the same consciousness their perspectives were entirely different, simultaneously the same but different. I wished the third book pushed that concept further. There weren't nearly enough instances of them butting heads.
