You guys say GOT is shit but there is nothing else like it. A fantasy book leaning towards realism without becoming European historical fiction or being filled with orcs and magic.

>leaning towards realism
Bloating your ice-zombie vs. return of the dragons fanfic with dinners and alcoholics don't make it "realism"

>> No.16952253

>>16952237
I'm talking about the first book.

>> No.16952257

Fantasy a shit
Read Tolkien if you must then don’t bother with any more of it

If you want to actually discuss books I suggest you head over to r books. All you'll get here is retards like this >>16952237
that haven't even read the books they're trying to throw criticisms at.

>> No.16952272

Tbh I love the books. Only Feast of Crows I think is weak

>> No.16952282

He hasn't read any of the books, just parroting some article he read or worse yet, parroting someone else who read an article, complaining about too many feasts happening in a series about medieval nobility.

Of course I've read the books. The first starts with a fucking ice zombie, don't give me your self-important bs about "realism"

Anon, I...
Read about the War of the Roses.

>> No.16952436

It's the fucking fantasy re-telling of the war of the roses mixed with ancient Roman history and alcholism

I'm not talking about the story. I'm talking about the world.

>>16952315
I haven't found anything close to it.

Well it's nowhere near a masterpiece but I gotta admit it's a cozy read

E.R.R Eddison's Mezentian Trilogy is like that

>> No.16953244

It gives fantasy a bad name: too many characters that all seem the same, horrible naming conventions, a world too big to keep track of. Someday it will be held up as the thing not to do.

Gene Wolfe is head and shoulders above Tolkien.

I just like soap opera tier political intrigue, i'm sorry anons

I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out none of the magic is real and its all just sci-fi telepathy/ telekinesis considering the author's previous work.

All the gods are going to be a time traveling 10 year old and I'm not sure whether I like that.

Jamie/Cersi stuff in feast is pretty good.

>> No.16953529

What are you even talking about? It's full of magic: your regular orcs are frost zombies, your elfs are children of the forest, your dragons are dragons, etc... It even follows the rusty trope of "The land was once filled with magic and wonder now lost, but fear not, our noble heroes are promptly going to uncover it all".
Fat Martin was at its best when he didn't touch the topic of magic. He is not good at it, he's not very imaginative with, his descriptions of it are lacking, and most of all, it completely pollutes and biases an otherwise fairly well constructed political plot.

Black Company is great

It's a bloated slog after the third book

GRRM supposed to be babby's first fantasy for guys who can talk to girls, but any guy who actually talked to girls who read, know they were fantasizing about Snape all along
