Do you think Pynchon was trying too hard to write the "great American novel" with Son & Xon, lads?

This is a lot less funny when it’s on your shelf showing just the “a” and “i” on the spine.

'the great American novel' is not a good book that just happens to be American, its this sort of weird concept that keeps popping up in American lit where a book is supposed to somehow completely capture or represent what America 'is' and whats beautiful about it, whats wrong with it, what it means to people, etc. idk where the concept originally came from or why people keep pushing for it but its definitely a thing.
