I reckon Plato's Republic, though it has flaws, is more flexible than you think, and would be far better than any state around today, and for the most part around then. It's a work of both utmost idealism and metaphysical truth (of both the political and non-political), and is also a work that includes practical ideas and recommendations about the state.

Plato is also doing political philosophy in the most typical sense, as well as the most brilliant.

As a political model it appears to me to be kind of useless. There are also sole very abstract and unfalsifiable ideas in the text. For example, the wisest philospohers should be kings, because the wisest ist the one who has the most skill for ruling. Ok nice, but it is obvious that the man best suited for the job will do the job best, it's a tautology.
The real problem is who decides what is best, there is zero reason why a ruler who appears wise is still selfish in many ways. He might not even drink, or have tons of sex and money but he could do many bad things in the name of his supposedly higher ideals.
