Her purpose in the novel is to allow Tolstoy to demonstrate the corruptions of the modern world/West. Everyone knows Tolstoy had a raging hard on for the provinces and asceticism. Only if poor little Anna had been born in the provinces or with a cock :( Tolstoy would have made her happy
