What are the best books about the history of the conquest and colonization of Latin America by the Spanish and Portuguese?
I have heard the open veins of Latin America by Galeano is utter shit.
I'm interested in both fiction and non fiction .

Very few countries can brag about having books like Lusiadas. If I was to count them, one hand would suffice

Are you looking for primary sources, secondary, literature, or for any specific countries?
And yes, avoid Galeano and Las Casas at all cost.
Check out some of the books in this folder

And maybe read 1492: España contra sus fantasmas, by Pedro Insua.
I don't know much about books for any specific country aside of my own (Chile).

History of the Conquest of Mexico by Prescott

Very entertaining book, he really brings out the adventure in what Cortez accomplished. Prescott lost one eye in a school food fight and the other to infection if I remember correctly.

Yes, read it too, it is great. Iván Vélez, Pedro Insua and María Elvira Roca Barea are 3 must read to debunk the Spanish Black Legend.

1. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS: «LATINOAMERICA»; THE CORRECT TERM TO REFER TO HISPANOAMERICA, AND LUSOAMERICA, AS WHOLE, IS: «IBEROAMERICA».

2. THE UNIVERSAL CHRISTIAN EMPIRE OF THE HISPANICAL MONARCHY, BEING SUCH, AND NOT A COLONIAL POLITY, HAD PROVINCES, NOT COLONIES.

3. READ THE CHRONICLES OF INDIES:
