Has anyone had any luck with book clubs? I've been going to one for a few years and they insist on mostly reading genre shit while talking about how they're attending to "try new books that they usually wouldn't read". I mostly stay for the social aspect at this point.

Has anyone had better success with their local ones or ever managed to steer things in a less airport-lit direction? I did put forward a more experimental book that I enjoyed once and some people really didn't like that it didn't have a conventional "goodie stops the baddie" narrative.

Nope, it's ridicolous - every single one is bread sandwich-level cuck bullshit. Even joined one with a rotating dictator who could pick books - read some utter shite but figured it was only fair. When it was my turn, I picked 'King Solomon's Mines' and not a single person even bought the book, let alone read it.

Fuck book clubs.

I'm not that guy but in my experience people show up anyway, admit they never read the book, then just engage in general conversation.

KDbooks starts one this December with a fairly small book. haven't joined it, because I want to finish some genre trash guilty pleasure of mine. I only know him because he reviewed A Learnèd Disguise

Why not start one? Everyone is used to zooming now anyways. People can have their video off. Make the password some phrase from the book being read.

It would be interesting if the discussion would be insufferable or not.

No my book club consisted of
> obese young mom who always brought in a YA sci-fi book for us to read
> brainlet beta male who wouldn't shut the fuck up about the Jack Reacher series
> a mom who meant well but didn't have anything more intense than Stephen King
> a woman that would pick the most boring books (I.e. a biography written for 7th graders) but would never show up
I tried to give them slaughterhouse five as an entry level book, but they all brushed it off at the meeting and talked about breaking bad.
Don't join book clubs. Society pushed you here for a reason, just take the hint
