Will I like this if I really liked J R? How similar are the two books?

>> No.16920868

I'm suspicious of any book titled "The Nouns". A surf-rock band, great, a novel, doubt.

I'm on the other end, I've read The Recognitions and am about to start JR. Its one of the densest books I've ever read, its super good, take your time with it, it helps if you know a little bit about art, but not needed.

Maybe. They are both a bit different. Both are masterful. Just read it and don't forget to read the rest of his works, if you like it. His other 3 novels are underrated.

something about gaddis intrigues me. is JR a fine place to start?

>> No.16922035

I read JR. I just think Gaddis is a hilarious author that really knows how to capture a scene in your head using solely dialogue. The way the scene transitions with sparse, fragmented narration is very cool, it's almost like you can picture it being filmed like a movie in your head. The book has a really nice flow to it and was just a fast read for me, there were times where I found myself laughing on every page for a while.

Related question.
If I hated J R is there any point trying The Recognitions?

FWIW, Jonathan Franzen loved The Recognitions and couldn’t finish J R. He wrote an entire essay about it. I guess TR is still worth checking out.

Not really, unless the only reason you disliked J R was it being too challenging to read. In that case, The Recognitions is certainly easier to follow and understand.

He got filtered by J R, he only expects entertainment from books and he said that The Recognitions is the hardest book he has ever read.
