Pynchon is over 6 feet. There's a picture of him where he is clearly tall. There is also a documentary about Pynchon on Youtube where the people who had actually met him describe him as very tall; it's near the end of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEJZtWlgQCo

He could have done multiple takes like >>16910441 says; he could have gotten better at dealing with it; he could have gotten them fixed; his "splutter" could have just been him spitting and wouldn't have carried over to the recording; there's of course the idea that it was a stand in, since this is the only supposed recording of Pynchon, there's nothing to compare it to and figure out if it's him or not. Just get a northeastern American (some New Englander) who's old and could be Pynchon and boom, you have "Pynchon". Of course there is that picture of the script that was sent to Pynchon where he puts comments and edits in the margins, so he had something to do with the episode and it's not impossible that he did his voice, but it's still a possibility.

Quite the opposite. Given how brilliant he was as a student both in hard science and the liberal arts plus his navy experience and path to work at Boeing makes me think he was probably being groomed for ingelligence work at some point. There's a distinct tonal departure between V. and Lot 49+GR, both of which I believe he began writing concurrently, where the paranoia really gets ramped up. I think this is in part to do with some discoveries made while at Boeing working in proximity to Bomarc weapons systems which ran on SAGE, essentially a military industrial complex precursor to Arpanet, which would eventually become consumer-level internet. Those latter two books are fucking filled with coded ideas and messages, in part because I legitimately think Pynchon was scared that he could get whacked for what he was writing, a fear probably stoked by the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of his close friend and vocal Castro sympathizer, Richard Fariña, to whom GR is dedicated. Let's look at Lot 49 for example. It's ostensibly about a woman discovering a secret message courier service with a long history of incarnations, largely being used by far-right individuals, but time and time again she meets random ass homeless people, hippies, people who assume it's just a service specific to their workplace all using WASTE. Sound familiar? Basically all of our consumer-level technologies trickle down to us eventually from origins in the military industrial complex and I think he foresaw developments like the internet in that the everyday person will assume it to be something ubiquitous and open to all, when it's still always structured atop a foundation of mapping and cataloging by war machines, placing a grid upon the face of the sky. The next earliest instance of something like this in history might be, oh I don't know, the V2 rocket
