If it's not money, it's recognition, or influence or supposed religious benefits they would get.
The idea that art in general has ever been selfless is fucking retarded. Barely any literature is written with anonymity and if folk singers could gain more recognition in their time they would do everything to do so. It doesn't affect the quality of art in any case so why do you care? Lewis Caroll's intentions in writing Alice are anything but pure and selfless but it's still a great work of art.
